Waikato SPCA Update September 2010

Hello Everyone

We raised a total of $5,950 on Cup Cake Day, compared to $2,848 raised last year.  Fantastic! There was wonderful support from local schools and some of the local businesses.   The animals and staff send a very big thank you to everyone who helped out and contributed to the total, and a special thank you to Carla, one of our staff members, for making lots of cup cakes.  Thank you also to the Cheesecake Shop for letting us use their kitchen and ingredients to make cupcakes and to Sky City who donated cupcakes for us to sell. Check out the website for a list of those who contributed to the fundraising.

As you know, the SPCA receives no direct government funding, which means fund raising is so important to enable the Branch to continue to provide much needed services to the community, run the Haven and Inspectorate and continue to provide education to the community on animal welfare issues.  It costs over $500,000 each year to run these services.  We have the National Appeal coming up in November and are currently seeking volunteers to help out.  We need lots of volunteers to make this a success, so please contact us to see how you can help.

The meeting for Members was held on 21 August, and not many of you attended. We will be holding these throughout the year and I encourage you to attend because it’s a chance to hear firsthand what is happening.

Kitten season is nearly upon us and indications are it will be very busy. We are working with other organisations and the councils to reduce the number of stray cats with a focus on education and desexing programmes.

The Animal Blessing day is on Sunday 3 October, and is being held at St Francis church off 92 Mansel Ave or 11-13 Morrinsville Rd, Hillcrest and 1200 noon. Come and join in this special occasion.

Christchurch SPCA is very busy coping with animals affected by the earthquake and a special earthquake emergency fund has been set up for donations. If you would like to help out, check out their website.

We are renovating the house at the moment, which isn’t the best thing to do during the winter months.  Poppy has been staying at grandma’s house while this has been going on and seems to have made herself very much at home, and I suspect is being very spoilt during her stay.  I am beginning to wonder if she will want to return home to us.

As always, thank you to everyone who makes animal welfare part of their daily life.
